Hello websailor,
If you are still using the method you described for ripping audio from DVD, I have another solution which may be more direct. Use Xilisoft DVD Audio Ripper 4. It allows you to rip directly into most formats, includ wav, mp3, ac3 etc. Use Sony Sound Forge or Nero Wave editor to edit and then Nero to burn to CD.
I stumbled upon your post while trying to solve another problem. I managed to salvage all the files from a faulty DVD. The DVD won't play on home dvd players and I have tried playing it on 3 different pc dvd roms to no avail. The disc was not recognized at all by a Benq DW1620 or Samsung SM-332B. The DVD rom that came with Dell Optiplex Minitower recognized it but then reported cyclic redundancy error. Finally, it was recognized and read properly by a Dell Optiplex SX270, which has the kind of DVD tray that a laptop uses, with clips to secure the disc to the spindle (whatever that tyoe of tray is called). I figured the other players couldn't recognize the disc because the disc is not balanced and it wobbles when spinning. Only when it is secured by the clips did it not wobble and could be read.
Anyway, I copied the files out and found that the audio volume of the movie is extremely low. So my mission is TO INCREASE VOLUME OF VOB FILES. Seems simple enough right but trust me, it is not. I have tried several DVD reauthoring software that allows you to trim, split, merge, shrink vob files but none allows you to do a simple volume adjust. I ripped the audio out using DVD Audio Ripper and used Sound Forge to bump up the volume but it seems like after doing that, the audio track becomes slightly shorter than the movie and therefore, does not sync with the video anymore. Another problem was that the video is 4:3 fullscreen, which I would like to preserve. But DVD authoring software like NeroVision Express 3, which although allows you to rebuild DVD with ripped files, automatically adds letterbox. There is no option to remove letterbox. Ah, frustrations! There are many softwares out there that can do many different things but none that can do everything. I will continue chipping at the problem and post my solution when I find it.

Did you ever find a solution to the letterbox problem? I have just used my new LG RC185 to dub all my old VHS-C home movies to DVD-R, and now I am looking to import them into something for editing. NeroVision Express 2 was fine until I asked it to render, then it crashed. NeroVision 3 worked and did not crash, but converted all my 4:3 source to letterbox. That is soo frustrating!
