My 9-year old CUV4X Asus motherboard is pronounced dead. I spent the whole night yesterday trying to install a 320GB hard disk into another 9 year old PC with Asus P3B-F motherboard. To my horror, this motherboard supports only up to 85 GB hard disk.
I was thinking of updating the BIOS. Unfortunately, the computer already has the latest BIOS.
I have almost forgotten how to create a bootable CDROM to upgrade the BIOS. Luckily it was not too difficult using WinImage with Nero. This can also be done with CDBurnerXP.
First use Nero to create a bootable CD. Select winxp.IMA as boot image.
Drag files to be place onto the same disc, bbie.exe in this example.
If CDBurnerXP is used instead of nero.
When a PC is booted up with the bootable CD created, it starts with a A:> dos command prompt. It displays something like
mscdex version 2.25. Copyright (c) Microsoft Corp, 1986-1991. All rights reserved.
Drive R: Driver TOMATO unit 0
Drive S: Driver TOMATO unit 0
Notice that bbie.exe is in R drive.
Eventually, I found out that the P3B-F motherboard has no problem supporting the 320 GB hard disk, although the BIOS is only reporting 85 GB.
