Our neighbour has moved to another place, I can no longer leech on his wireless network anymore. Teck has subscribed to a mobile wireless broadband internet service from iZZi. This beast comes with a USB modem, iZZiyou. I want to share the internet connection with a few computers. It is rather challenging to do that. iZZi actually offers other modems with Ethernet port that can be connected to linksys router to share internet connection easily. But I agree with Teck that it makes most sense to get the one with USB. It is small and really mobile.
I have a linksys WRT54G router, a desktop PC (I called it iZZi PC for easy reference) that is connected to the iZZi USB modem. This iZZi PC has an ethernet card.
My first attempt to share the internet connection was to configure the iZZi PC as a proxy server. I tried freeproxy from handcraftedsoftware.org. The ethernet card from the iZZi PC was connected to one of the linksys router's regular ports (not the WAN port) using an ethernet cable. This means the router is used as a switch. This configuration works great for the internet browsers on other client computers connected to the router to surf the internet. The only little hazzle is probably the need to change the browsers' proxy settings on the client computers. Unfortunately one big problem is my Contivity VPN client software is not able to connect to my company network. This is probably because freeproxy is only a internet proxy.
I figured out later that with my hardware, there is an alternative without installing any additional software. I just need to connect an internet cable from my iZZi PC to the linksys WAN port.
